The girls volleyball team defeated West Mifflin in three straight sets Monday, scoring a solid start to the 2023 season.
“The first set, we had really good defense. (Another set), we had really good offense,” senior Allison Huschak said. “Jess Linden was able to see the holes in the block and hit aggressively at West Mifflin.”
Another player who stood out was Ashley Skowronski, the libero. Playing this position is an impressive feat for a sophomore, as the libero is considered the best passer and defensive player on the court.
Though the Highlanders won in three sets, the match was not always a sure thing. West Mifflin gained a lead in both the first and second sets. But these leads were upset by Baldwin’s consistent exploitation of West Mifflin’s weaknesses.
“One key to the game was finding where they weren’t,” Huschak said. “We were able to tip (the ball) to spots they couldn’t cover well.”
Though it was a non-section contest, the match provided an encouraging start to the season.
“I have high hopes for this year,” Huschak said.
The team’s next game is at home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Seneca Valley.
