The Baldwin girls softball team plays at the 6A level.

Baldwin’s softball team picked up its second win in a row on Monday, coming back to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 7-5.

Sophomore Kaylee Smolko said the team “came back well” after being down 5-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.

Smolko started the two out rally in the sixth, sophomore Gabby Jaquay said.

“Kaylee Smolko started the inning with a single while they were two outs. And another hit advanced her to second with a runner being on first as well,” Jaquay said. “Keira Platz got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Anna Schumacher.

What came next was just what the Highlanders needed, as Schumacher hit a two RBI double.

Junior Lacey Bonetti said that hit got the team back into the winning mood.

“Anna really brought the game back to us and it changed the whole mood,” Bonetti said.

Senior Grace Schumacher then stepped up to bat and laid down a risky bunt, but it played out well for the Highlanders as an overthrow to first allowed two more runs to score. This gave the Highlanders the lead at 6-5.

“Her bunt was great. It made us all excited,” Jaquay said.

The Highlanders then got one more insurance run. This was a team win for the girls.

“We scored the runs we needed to get ahead,” Smolko said. “All of us hit well, so I felt it was a big team win,” she said.

Smolko said Lebo played well, but the Highlanders got the runs they needed.

“They fielded well, and they definitely got the outs when they needed to,” she said. “We definitely got more hits with two outs.”

The comeback win was very satisfying, Bonetti said.
