The new Korean crime action film Kill Boksoon, streaming on Netflix, tells the tale of a single mom,  Gil Bok-soon, who leads a double life as an assassin.

The thriller, starring Jeon Do-yeon, follows Bok-soon, also known as Kill Boksoon, as she navigates being both the top assassin for the agency MK Ent and a mom to her teenage daughter, Gil Jae-young.

Bok-soon’s dilemmas as a mother in the moments where her two lives intersect create a good portrayal of the work-life balance captured on the screen.  Keeping her daughter in the dark about her career creates some funny sequences throughout the film.

Viewers also learn about  Kill Boksoon’s past through multiple flashbacks.

The movie gets a tad bit confusing, as the audience is quickly introduced to multiple characters. But writer-director Byun Sung-hyun gives everyone an elaborate backstory along with dimension.

While the first half of the movie lacks in action, the second half picks it up with a couple of exceptionally strong fight scenes. Each action piece is set up elaborately, and some scenes definitely will make viewers want to rewatch the film to fully take everything in.

The violence and gore might be too much for some, but for fans of the genre, each piece of action is enjoyable.
