In Pieces, the debut solo album from Chlöe, delivers powerful vocals and decent lyrics.

Chlöe has been releasing music for many years alongside her sister Halle under the name Chloe x Halle. However, when Halle was cast as Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Chlöe decided to create a solo body of work.

The album opens with “Someone’s Calling (Chlöe),” a track with minimal lyrics that shows off Chlöe’s powerful voice.

The lead single off the album, “Pray It Away,” is a powerful song and is evidently gospel inspired. There are points throughout the song where the background vocals are reminiscent of a church choir.

The track “Body Do” is the most upbeat song on the record. The song is easy to dance to and provides good contrast to the more slow songs that follow.

Chlöe is especially able to display her vocal prowess on tracks like “I Don’t Mind” and “Worried.” The harmonies on these songs are impressive and reminiscent of the songs she has created with her sister.

When Chlöe released “How Does It Feel” with Chris Brown as the album’s second single, she received backlash due to Brown’s problematic past. Despite the controversy of the track, the song is still strong and is one of the best written on the record.

Tracks like “Feel Me Cry” and “Make It Look Easy” add to the emotional layer of the album. On these songs, Chlöe details her struggles with relationships and her self image. These tracks are well written and audiences are able to relate to the issues she is singing about.

“Told Ya” with Missy Elliot is easily the most experimental song on the album. The lyrics are confident and are delivered with a strong and unique beat. Elliot’s feature adds to the track and emphasizes the quirkiness of the song.

The record closes with the title track, which contains the strongest lyrics of the album. The ballad focuses on her love for a man and her desire to be with him, no matter what difficulties she faces.

Overall, In Pieces is a strong solo debut and is successful in showcasing Chlöe as one of the strongest vocalists of the new generation.
