The supergroup Boygenius brings a new variety to the indie genre with its first full-length release, The Record.

The Record opens with “Without You Without Them.” This track is a very strange opening because it is a minute and 21 seconds of harmonies with no backing music.

As strange as it might be, the first song sets the tone for the rest of the album because each song is so unique. However, “Without You Without Them” could have been easily left out and not missed.

The best song on the album is “$20,” not only because of how upbeat it is, but because it stands out so clearly on a melancholy indie album as a rock-like song.

Phoebe Bridgers, the most well known member of the supergroup, tends to take over as a vocalist for the majority of the time. Although Bridgers has a beautiful voice, she almost overshadows the rest of the group.

The other members of Boygenius, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, can be heard loud and clear on “True Blue” and “Leonard Cohen.”

The Record has an ongoing theme of a lack of self sufficiency and failure. Each song has certain aspects of letting yourself and others down as well as never feeling good enough.

This more personal and independent theme is refreshing since Bridgers is known for her heartbreak songs.
