NFL free agency reshapes some teams

The NFL’s free agency opened last week and has opened opportunities for teams to begin their push to becoming a dynasty.

The biggest winners of free agency so far have been the two worst teams this past season, the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans.

The Bears were able to do a full rebuild of their roster, signing many stars like Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, and Nate Davis.

Tremaine Edmunds is definitely the biggest name, signing with the Bears for four years, $72 million, since he was one of the best linebackers last year for the Buffalo Bills. He had 66 tackles and six tackles for loss in 13 games.

The deal may look a little surprising on paper as his stats don’t jump out of the box, but he will prove to be a great signing in the long run since he is only 24 years old.

The Bears were the worst team in the league last year, earning them the No. 1 pick. Considering they have a likely franchise quarterback in Justin Fields, many fans weren’t surprised when they traded down in the draft.

They traded with the Carolina Panthers and got the number 9 and 61 picks, along with a 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick. They also received star wide receiver D.J. Moore, giving their offense a new wide receiver 1 to pair with Darnell Mooney.

The Texans were the second-worst team last year and have also had a complete turnaround of their roster.

They have not had any major signings, but were able to re-sign star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $75 million deal. They have also signed many starting caliber players, such as Devin Singletary, Robert Woods, and Dalton Schultz, and Jimmie Ward.

They also traded for star offensive guard Shaq Mason to protect the new franchise quarterback they are expected to pick in the draft. They hope to make signing with them appealing for the new QB by building weapons and building up the offensive line.

This team could surprise some people this upcoming season depending on the success of their quarterback.

With Lamar Jackson being franchise tagged, fans thought free agency would be a letdown, but with the trades that have been made, it has revived this offseason.

The New York Giants traded the number 100 pick for tight end Darren Waller from the Raiders. His career up to this point had been disappointing, being filled with injuries. If the Giants can keep the injuries out of his playing, he will be a big part of their offense.

The Miami Dolphins traded the 77th pick and tight end Hunter Long in exchange for one of the best cornerbacks in the league, Jalen Ramsey from the Rams.

The Dolphins had one of the best starts last year, but after their quarterback Tua Tagovailoa got hurt, it started to fall apart. Getting Ramsey will help their defense and will allow for Tua to have to do less for the team.

The Rams have been a win-now team for the last eight years, trading their first-round picks for the last few years, and now it is coming back to haunt them. They are starting to unravel their team in hopes to start their rebuild early and not become a laughingstock of the league in a few years.

All the things fans hear about Aaron Rodgers are getting old, but it really will impact the upcoming season as well as the future for both the Packers and the Jets if that trade does go through.

The Jets have officially become a win-now team, trying to trade for a 39-year-old Aaron Rodgers and giving up a major part of their future through picks. He has asked for specific players to give him the best chance to go for another Super Bowl.

The Packers are the exact opposite in this trade, starting their rebuild and hoping to find their new franchise quarterback in either Jordan Love or the NFL draft. They have lost many key offensive players like Rodgers, Allen Lazard, who left for the Jets at the request of Rodgers, and Robert Tonyan, who went to the rival Bears.

Each day, the talks of star receiver Deandre Hopkins getting traded seem more and more likely. He has had injury-ridden years in Arizona and looks to get a fresh start somewhere else.

Free agency is nearing a close and these moves have cemented teams as playoff contenders and lottery winners.
