A girls futsal team featuring Baldwin-Whitehall students won a championship game on Wednesday.

Futsal is essentially soccer played inside with teams of five players on a basketball-sized court field. It is fast-paced and emphasizes foot skills.

The team consisting of players from the district is called Baldwin Purple. Among the players were junior Emma Lieu, sophomore Mia Beardsley, and freshmen Ella Schwarzmiller and Daytona Hissong.

Baldwin Purple earned the championship with a 5-0 win over Keystone Oaks at Phillips Recreation Center in the CitiSports Winter Futsal League.

Beardsley gave a shout out to the team’s goalie, seventh-grader Evelyn Johnson.

“She carried our team, and she has a lot of potential for someone this young,” Beardsley said.

Beardsley has loved futsal since her younger days.

“I played it when I was younger with my cup team, and my love for it always stayed with me,” Beardsley said.
