Both indoor percussion and indoor color guard placed last in their events at Penn-Trafford High School on Saturday.

Indoor percussion performed their show “Into the Wild,” which is based on the book Where the Wild Things Are. The color guard is performing “Alice In Wonderland.”

Indoor percussion placed fourth out of four schools, missing out on third by 0.2 of a point. They competed against North Allegheny, Moon Area, and Gateway percussion.

“We had some timing issues, but that comes from learning and performing a show every week,” sophomore Caroline Presto said.

The guard struggled because much of the material was new, sophomore Emma Smerbeck said.

The guard added new parts to the choreography earlier last week, and this was their first competition with props. Their thoroughly rehearsed pieces are more refined, but the newer pieces still need work, Smerbeck said.

Sharing gym space and having limited practice time has led to the late progression of the show, yet with championships still a month or so away, Smerbeck is confident the show will be more refined before then.

Indoor percussion’s show “is very unique and as a group we all realize that,”  Presto said. “We perform very well as a group, and we have great teamwork and work ethic together.”

Presto hopes that indoor percussion and color guard will place higher in the next competition, Saturday at Hempfield.
