Baldwin’s gymnastics team placed third place in the gold division at states over the weekend.

Sophomore Abby Rexrode placed first on bars and second on floor for the Highlanders.

“She is our best gymnast and works very hard. She has a lot of pressure on her, but she still pulls it out in the end,” sophomore Annabelle Herrle said.

Junior Ashley Brown had a great beam routine, sophomore Sophia Rossa said.

The team worked hard this season to make it to states even after facing some losses.

“Our biggest challenge was injuries this season. We had girls hurt during the season and it will be nice to have them in the lineup next year,” said Rexrode.

Rossa had a spinal compression fracture and was only able to participate in two meets.

“She just came back from an injury and it was her first meet back. She did a really good job and her score helped the team,” Rexrode said.

Not only was her injury a physical burden, but also a mental one.

“States was hard because I did not have much practice, but it was mostly a mental game and this season was hard because I could not do anything to speed up my recovery,” Rossa said.

Through it all, the team has been very supportive of each other.

“My favorite part of the season was being able to watch my teammates improve. I love seeing their faces when they place and when they get new high scores,” Herrle said.
