Members of the Baldwin Special Olympics and Best Buddies clubs volunteered at the Special Olympics Winter Games Wednesday and today at Seven Springs.

Junior Elizabeth Langer was excited to volunteer at the games and help out.

“It was cool to see all of the athletes – to help them out and hype them up,” said Langer.

Baldwin split into three groups, and each group worked at a different ski slope. The volunteers helped keep score, time players’ run, and fix fencing along the paths.

Senior Payton Redman said she enjoyed volunteering at the event and loves to help people.

“I don’t expect anything back. It’s just who I am,” Redman said.

Redman is glad that Baldwin has so many opportunities for those who may have special needs.

“There’s such a negative stigma around people who are different than us,” Redman said. “Socializing is an important part about being human – talking to people, and realizing you’re all just people.”

Redman hopes that more people volunteer at the event next year.

“We didn’t have many volunteers, but we made it work,” Redman said. “I think more people should help out, especially because we have so many opportunities,” Redman said.
