Sophomore Abby Rexrode won her second straight all-around gymnastics championship in the WPIAL diamond division at Moon Area High School on Saturday.

After winning top gymnastics honors last year as a freshman, Rexrode was able to defend her title over the weekend. The competition was especially close this year.

“It ended up being between me and the girl who got second place,” she said, with about a tenth of a point separating the two.

Rexrode was pleased with her performance.

“I was happiest with my beam routine because I stuck to it,” Rexrode said.

Rexrode faced an injury in December last year, and was nervous to see how the season would turn out.

“I was just scared about coming back and seeing how far I would come,” Rexrode said. “I didn’t let anything set me back, not even the injury.”

Rexrode said she is ready to go for three straight wins next year.

Junior Ashley Brown, meanwhile, came in second all-around in the gold division. Brown congratulated her teammates who helped everyone pull through.

“Abby Rexrode did great at competing against the other high schools,” Brown said.
