The boys basketball team went 1-1 in the Franklin Regional Memorial tournament this weekend, losing to West Mifflin on Friday night and winning against Carlynton on Saturday.

Senior James Wesling scored 40 points on Friday, coming close to the school record 48 points he scored in a game last year.

The Highlanders played strong offensively that first game, but they lacked on defense in the second half.

“We let the game get away from us in the second half. We made their team look better than they actually were,” he said. We also struggled to rebound at some points throughout the tournament, giving the teams second-chance opportunities.”

In Saturday’s victory over Carlynton, Wesling again led the Highlanders, this time getting 22 points. He also was named to the all-tournament team.

Senior AJ Cherico said the boys were expecting to go 2-0 over the weekend, so going 1-1 was disappointing.

“We need to keep working,” Cherico said.

The weekend put the team’s overall record at 3-2. They had hoped to win all five of their first games.

“However, this does not bring down our team morale as we are still able to achieve all the goals we had set for the season,” Wesling said.
