The Baldwin varsity ice hockey team plays in the 3A division.

The boys hockey team won against Cathedral Prep 5-2 Tuesday night.

Seniors Matt O’Malley and Ben Cramer scored early for Baldwin.

“We were slow in the first and second, and then came out fast in the third. We scored right off of the faceoff then had a power play goal,” O’Malley said.

Senior Goaltender Alex Golvash shut the door on 34 of 36 shots.

Senior Nick Buys feels that the team played at a high level and fast pace.

“We played faster and stronger than them. They could not keep up with us,” Buys said. “If we can keep playing like this, no one will be able to stop us.”

Senior Levi McCrea and junior Tanner Plinta picked up big goals in the third period, with McCrea scoring two, to secure the win for the Highlanders.

This game was the first for the boys since Oct. 31. Senior Nick Buys wishes they played more, but still feels comfortable.

“More games would be nice, but we still practice often to make sure we can secure wins as we showed last night,” Buys said.

O’Malley said the practices have been key.

“We practiced on regroups and breakouts a lot. We definitely used the time we had to our advantage by putting in hard work,” O’Malley said.

The Highlanders play their next game on Dec. 5 at 9:10 p.m. away against Mount Lebanon.
