For years my family has been in the military, or more specifically the Army or the Navy.

The military history in my family dates back to the Civil War, and even to knights in England. Growing up I would hear about my grandfather’s time in the Navy from him until he passed away in 2012, and then my family took over telling us what they knew of his time.

I have always been interested in being in the military in some type of way. My family believed I would go into nursing. I wanted to do communications for a long time until I finally found my true passion, which was diving.

Being a swimmer – and especially a diver – is a huge advantage for those wishing to join the Navy. My plan is to enlist right out of high school for deep sea diving and welding.

I get asked often “What made you choose the military?” and my answer will always be, “My grandfather, and to try to fix the mess that was made.” Many people believe that a woman going into deep sea diving and welding must be crazy, but how crazy is it to prove people wrong?

The Navy has always been my favorite branch even though I have family in the Army. I started a club to help other students who are interested in the military and plan on taking my love for our country into my career to help make this country better.

The generations of my family who have served for our country will always stand with me in the fight for our country to keep our freedom and for us as people to keep our rights.
