The decades-old story of the Batman is a tale often retold over the years. Lately a series of movies have become the most popular way of telling the vigilante’s story.

The Batman’s films and comics have led to quite a famous and well known story timeline. The same villains – such as the Joker, Harley Quinn, and the Riddler – appear in just about every re-creation of the original Batman.

Lesser-known villains such as Mr. Freeze, Firefly, Solomon Grundy, Hugo Strange, and The Penguin are less frequently featured in the re-creations. But the series Gotham does an extraordinary job of giving these forgotten villains their deserved screen time.

Also, rather than focus on a Bruce Wayne in his 30s, the series instead follows Detective James Gordon. Bruce appears as a side character in the pilot episode, seeking answers after the murder of his parents.

James and Bruce are united by the passion they share for justice and the yearning to discover who killed Martha and Thomas Wayne and why.

Instead of Bruce facing director favorites such as The Joker and The Riddler, these villains fall into Detective Gordon’s timeline. And while James and his allies are keeping Gotham stable, Bruce is training to assume the position of the city’s vigilante.

Gotham does an extraordinary job of giving light to the plethora of villains the Batman comics have to offer. Any DC comic fan should give the series a try, as it offers a different look on a timeless but overused story.
