A landmark moment for the girls softball season, junior Grace Schumacher says, came when the Highlanders shut out Peters Township.

“We were convinced the season was going well when we beat Peters Township 10-0. It was a good game. Everyone had a good attitude and we were all very positive.”

That strong season continues today, as Baldwin faces Norwin in the first round of playoffs.

Freshman Gabby Jaquay is excited for her first high school playoff game.

“As a freshman, making the playoffs is a huge accomplishment, and I’m glad I am able to take part in it,” Jaquay said.

Schumacher, meanwhile, said the team’s chances of winning will be much higher if they go into the game with confidence.

“We need to have a better outlook on the games instead of starting off with a negative attitude. If you start off negative, you’re less likely to win,” Schumacher said.

Her sister, sophomore Anna Schumacher, agreed.

“We have to start the game off with a positive attitude. That is when we have a good game. If we start with a negative attitude, the game just falls apart for us,”  Anna Schumacher said.

Baldwin’s pitching has been dominating this season, even though the record might not show it. The pitchers will have to be sharp today, as Norwin’s bats have been hot this season

“Our pitching really needs to keep the focus up for this game against Norwin tonight. We haven’t played them this season, but by just hearing about their team, a lot of their players hit really well,” Jaquay said.

Senior Maleah Pacella said that the Highlanders’ defense has been good, but sometimes the offense needs to be stronger.

“The pitching has gotten better with the four pitchers we have,” Pacella said. “Our hitting is a little rough – it depends on the game sometimes. Defense is probably the best part of our team as they don’t make many errors.”

Grace Schumacher said that the team is confident about the playoffs.

“Our confidence is pretty high, but it depends on if the team is willing to give it their all during the playoffs,” Schumacher said.
