Opinion: Rodgers, Wilson highlight intense crazy NFL day

Tuesday might have been one of the craziest days in NFL offseason history.

To start the day out, Aaron Rodgers decided to run it back with the Packers. He was supposed to be the best available free agent this year, but has now broken the hearts of many fans of NFL teams that are looking for a quarterback, like the Steelers.

With Rodgers saying he would return to the Packers on a salary cap friendly deal, it allows for the Packers to sign more weapons for the offense. It also made the decision to franchise tag Davonte Adams much easier on the Packers, as he has said he would only come back if Rodgers is his quarterback.

Rodgers has definitely wanted this to be the outcome the whole time. His goal was to always be back with the Packers, but some decisions by the front office made his future unknown. He is open to take a salary cap friendly deal as he would like to get the Packers back to the Super Bowl.

Adams should have been a more important signing to the Packers, but with Rodgers’ future being so up in the air till this point, Adams wanted to play with Rodgers for the rest of his career. If his choice was to leave the Packers, he would have tried to join his old college teammate Derek Carr in Las Vegas.

After that decision, everyone thought the day would only have small signings of average players back to their team, but the biggest trade fans may see all offseason happened.

The Denver Broncos traded for Russell Wilson, making the Seahawks instantly a team in rebuild and making the Broncos a major threat in the AFC West.

The Broncos have been looking for a franchise quarterback since 2016, after Peyton Manning won them Super Bowl 50. Denver was in the running and looked like the best option for Aaron Rodgers, but after he signed back to the Packers, the Broncos knew they couldn’t go another year with a rented quarterback. So they gave up a massive haul to acquire their quarterback of the near future.

The Seahawks put themselves in an immediate quarterback search after the trade. They also released Bobby Wagner, the longest-tenured player of the Seahawks, who had been with the team since 2012. He was an eight-time Pro Bowler, six time All-Pro first team and part of the 2010s All-Decade team.

The release of Wagner was seen as a salary cap dump to allow the Seahawks to target young, proven players to make them a contender in the next few years.

The Seahawks seemed unhappy with their roster all season, with Wilson going down early to a hand injury, which sidelined him for five weeks. The team seems to be looking in the way of rebuilding, but they still have a very capable roster to make a playoff run as long as they get some big free agents as well as a higher-tier quarterback.

People around the NFL believe that the Seahawks may try to trade for Deshaun Watson, as they have now acquired multiple assets, including the ninth overall pick and two high second-round picks. They also could trade players like Jamal Adams, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Many teams in the market for a quarterback have just about lost hope on trying to trade for a quarterback. So they can now only look forward to the draft, where they can try to find their star quarterback of the future.

Many other less important moves happened on Tuesday as well. Orlando Brown, Mike Geisicki, David Njoku, Jessie Bates, Dalton Schultz, Chris Godwin, and Cam Robinson have all joined Adams in being franchise tagged.

Where the Steelers fit into all of this is unknown right now.

They were one of the franchises that Rodgers could have chosen to be his new team. They were also thought to be considering a trade for Wilson, but the door on that has been closed.

The team’s only hopes at this point are to try to trade up and get a top-tier quarterback in the draft; try to trade for Watson if his unresolved legal situations get resolved, or try to sign a quarterback out of free agency like Jimmy Garapollo, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, or Mitch Triubisky.

The Steelers have been put in a tough situation with the possibility of Mason Rudolph being a starter next year. They better figure something out before it becomes too late and they get stuck with a mediocre quarterback. The hiring of Brian Flores, who had a close relationship with Watson, makes many Steeler fans believe that he now has the best chance to sign with the Steelers.

The Steelers also need to re-sign many key players, like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Joe Haden, Ahkello Witherspoon, Trai Turner, Terrell Edmunds, James Washington and many more. These players should be a priority over a quarterback, as they can always just draft or trade for one.

The Steelers also could try to sign some free agent offensive linemen, like Brandon Schreff, Nate Solder, Eric Fisher, Laken Tomlinson, Ryan Jensen and many more as well. If they cannot form an average offensive line, all of the quarterback talk and re-signings would become useless.
