Singer/songwriter Channel Tres’ new album, Refresh, lives up to its title.

After previously releasing a lyric-driven album with notable features, this instrumental tape comes as a big surprise. In a time when millions of albums are released every day, this is a breath of fresh air fans can listen to in any context. It serves as both a project to dance to and one to unwind.

The project begins with “Over and Over,” a track which almost immediately hooks listeners with its in-and-out effects paired with its disco drums.

“Pathways” sounds like perfect rave music, though it’s quite lengthy. It begins with a suspenseful, minute-long synth section and builds up to a funkier pocket.

“Antigua,” arguably, is this project’s best track. It’s a mind-bending, psychedelic song with several beat changes that hit listeners when they least expect it. It has an epic sound that would fit seamlessly on a sci-fi film’s soundtrack.

Fans of Kaytranada, Flying Lotus, and those who love synths will appreciate this project.
