The Morning Announcements are being overseen by Baldwin’s new tech ed teacher, and he has big plans for the daily broadcast.

Chris Tator, who runs the Video Production class that creates the broadcasts, said that with all the possibilities here at Baldwin, the Morning Announcements could do a lot of new things.

“The class plans to have different sorts of announcements than other schools,” he said. “I would like to be able to have multiple reporters in multiple areas around the school to make it seem like a real news broadcast.”

The announcements are recorded during first period and put on the BHS Video Production YouTube channel. They are aired during homeroom.

Michael Scarpaci and Alana McDade were the anchors as the Morning Announcements kicked off on Tuesday.

“I was nervous during the beginning and the nerves got really high right before it started,” Scarpaci said. “Once you start, all of the nerves die down and the only scare is messing up the script.”

Before the new bell schedule created a common homeroom time, the Morning Announcements aired live at the end of first period. Now, when the anchors go to their homerooms after third period, they get to see the broadcasts.

“Seeing myself during homeroom is where I can see any mistakes I made,” he said. “It sounds really weird listening to your voice during the mornings,” he said.

McDade first joined the Morning Announcements team after being invited by some friends.

“I had a couple of friends doing it which is why I joined, and I kept doing it because it was fun,” she said.

McDade said that being part of the broadcast is fun, and that she is grateful to have such a role.

“There’s always that ‘Oh my gosh that’s me?’ or ‘Oh my gosh that’s my voice?’ moment, which is kind of cool,” she said. “It is very cool playing that kind of role in the community and drawing people’s attention to the announcements.”

Creating a daily broadcast involves a lot of work by the entire class in a little time. As an announcer, McDade also still gets a little nervous just before the announcements start.

“There’s always a little nervousness when you’re on camera, but it gets easier. This is my third year, so I’m used to it.”
