Parking lot plan sets buses moving

by Michelle Bruni

Students were irked late October when the school district alerted student drivers of their new exit route. Although rumors sparked about safety issues concerning students and car accidents, the main concern was bus timing with the elementary and middle schools on time.

Before the new route was announced student drivers were able to enter and exit the parking lot near the Guard Booth. However, when parents from the district’s other schools complained about their children arriving home late, the school district found a solution within the high school’s parking lot.

With students required to leave school through the upper lot’s gate, the buses are able to exit the campus and onto Route 51 in a faster manner and reach the other schools on time.

“Safety-wise, this new exit makes sense. It is easier to drive with kids walking to their cars instead of driving against them. But it is not very convenient for students who live in the opposite direction,” School Board Student Representative Eddie Lippl said.

Students did not urge their parents to make phone calls in complaint of the new detour, Vice Principal Jon Peebles commented.

“I would be mad too,” Peebles said. “I would want to be in my car rocking out.”

The new route has been in place for over a month now and busses have reached the schools earlier and on time.

Dean of Students Peter Wagner noted, “There is no perfect solution, but we’re doing the best we can.”
