Lil Yachty was just one of the few breakout artists in 2016 who were known for their colorful personalities, songs, and hair colors.

Yachty recently dropped his fourth studio album, Lil Boat 3, and it serves as a mature, yet still youthful and upbeat addition to the rapper’s discography.

The album doesn’t rely on lyricism or pure rapping, but instead focuses on making tracks that are fun to listen to. They often contain features from some of today’s hottest artists.

The absolute standout song on the album, “T.D,” features a lineup of hip-hop heavy hitters in Tierra Whack, A$AP Rocky, and Tyler, The Creator.

The track samples the iconic “Tokyo Drift” by Teriyaki Boyz, which most people will recognize from the third installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise.

All four artists deliver hard-hitting verses as expected, but the most surprising verse comes from Tierra Whack, as the Philadelphia native flows effortlessly over the incredibly catchy beat.

Other standouts on the album, such as “Till the Morning,” featuring Young Thug and Lil Durk, and “Oprah’s Bank Account,” with Drake and Baby, reveal the main issue with the album. The best songs on the album all have features, and Yachty’s solo tracks seem to act more as filler in between the best songs.

This isn’t to say that Yachty disappoints, as solo tracks like “Don’t Forget,” and “Can’t Go” fit the upbeat and fun formula that fans of Yachty are used to hearing.

But on certain songs, like “Love Jones,” it becomes clear that Yachty sometimes has trouble carrying songs on his own.

Overall, the album is a solid and fun collection of songs with excellent production from some of the most well known producers in hip-hop. Yachty has proven that he has his own unique place in the rap game, and this album doesn’t take away from that.

If you’re looking to have a good time and listen to music that is simply enjoyable and upbeat, then this album is for you.
