Baldwin’s cheer competition team came in fifth place in states over the weekend.

It was a roller-coaster weekend for the Highlanders: They were in second place at the end of preliminaries on Friday, but on Saturday the team made uncharacteristic mistakes and fell to fifth.

“We usually don’t make these mistakes even at practice and it cost us that day,” senior Abby Zuder said.

Still, the team won WPIALs earlier this month, and has earned a bid to go to nationals at Disney next month.

“We are looking for big redemption going to nationals,” Zuder said.

Zuder said the team performed with confidence over the weekend, and the seniors stepped up as leaders.

“We have a pretty young team and the seniors stepped up as big role models,” Zuder said.

Zuder said she wishes the team would have placed better but she is still proud of their performance.
