It went down to an overtime shootout, but the Baldwin varsity hockey team remains undefeated after a 2-1 win against Meadville on Monday night.

This makes the team’s record 7-0, which puts them first in the section.

Junior Dylan Belak led the team to victory, scoring the Highlanders’ lone goal during regulation, and then following up with the shootout winner. Belak’s first goal was assisted by sophomores Trevor Belak and Dom Trimbur in the second period.

“We didn’t have our best game, but we stuck with them through the entirety of the game,” Belak said.

Working to maintain that perfect record is difficult, he said.

“As a team we were very relieved to have won the game because there was a lot of pressure going into it,” Belak said.

Junior Keith Reed played with high intensity and overall had a very physical game for the Highlanders, Belak said. Senior Tanner Cindrich blocked three shots in the shootout and had about 30 saves throughout the game.

“It felt good to get a shootout win especially after how hard we played,” Belak said.

The team’s next game will be Dec. 9 at Ice Castle.

“I think we need to avoid having a big ego and keep going into games working just as hard as the game before in order to succeed this season,” Belak said.
