The St. Gabe’s CYO basketball team claimed the CYO diocesan championship Sunday night, improving the Gators’ record to 19-0 on the season.

The St. Gabriel CYO team came third in the state this weekend in Philadelphia after an impressive season with an overall record of 21-1.

The team won against St. Ignatius on Friday, took their first loss of the season against Saint Simon and Jude on Saturday, and won their final game against St. Joan of Arc on Sunday.

Senior Dre Howell said seniors Andy Sopata, Jaquon Parker, Colton Barr, Victor Silvestre, and junior Nick Dolan all played really well this weekend.

“Nick had lockdown defense, and Andy just does everything,” Howell said.

Senior Andy Sopata was happy with his teammates’ performance too.

“Jaquon is just a beast; he is always running.” he said.

Sopata was pleased with their performance, but said it did not exceed expectations because they were not undefeated.

The only two members of this year’s team who are eligible to return next year are juniors Nick Dolan and Dom George.
