The St. Gabe’s CYO basketball team claimed the CYO diocesan championship Sunday night, improving the Gators’ record to 19-0 on the season.

The team defeated St. Athanasius 65-43, in a rematch of last year’s diocesan final, where Gabe’s lost. But the Gators later defeated St. A’s on their way to last year’s state championship.

Senior guard Colton Barr was excited to bring home the diocesan trophy this year.

“It feels good not to lose a game,” Barr said.

Barr was also happy because of how the team all played together.

“Everyone on the team played,” Barr said. “Everyone contributed in their own way.”

Fellow senior Andy Sopata agreed and said he enjoyed the game’s atmosphere.

“We shut all their key players down,” Sopata said. “Shout-out to the fans for being there for us.”

The Gators will travel to Philadelphia over the weekend to compete in the state playoffs, hoping to defend their crown and win back-to-back titles.
