The Baldwin girls varsity basketball team on Thursday won its first section game in two seasons, posting a 45-23 victory over Connellsville.

Baldwin began the game with an all-sophomore lineup of Abby Marzina, Anna Lucarelli, Nina Dongilli, Meghan Dryburgh, and Lexi Bernotas.

Junior guard Lexie Kennard praised the girls after the big win.

“The starters played great,” Kennard said. “Nina has been our most improved player all season.”

The girls went up 17 against Connellsville, and never trailed behind the entire game.

Baldwin hopes to become a playoff team this year after missing the playoffs last season.

“We’re going to carry the momentum into the next game,” Kennard said.

The Highlanders are currently 3-2 overall, and are 1-2 in the section. Their next game is at Fox Chapel on Saturday.

“We are expecting to win,” Kennard said.
