The Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet is not a series to watch while leisurely snacking on popcorn and soda. Viewers who think they’re sitting down to watch a lighthearted show involving a happy-go-lucky Realtor couple and their angsty teenage daughter are sorely mistaken.

Santa Clarita Diet begins with the story of suburban mother Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore), whose life takes a turn for the gory following a bad clam dinner that transforms her into a much tidier version of a George Romero-esque zombie.

Following this revelation — and her first onscreen kill — her Realtor husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) exemplifies the term “for better or for worse” and stays by her side.

Together they navigate the waters of murder cover-ups and gang leaders, along with the quintessential suburbanite problems of annoying neighbors and parent-teacher conferences.

Although the production itself is filled with unnecessary carnage and predictable jokes, the best part of this show is how genuinely surprising and developed each plot twist is.

Considering the Hammonds’ roles as community members, whose date nights just happen to be killing sprees, this show can move in many different directions and continue to flow.

Like many Netflix originals, this production begins slow, but overall the series holds promise for a Season 2.
