Arctic Monkeys have finally released a new album after five years, but Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is far from their familiar and comforting sounds.

All the songs on the record were originally played on a piano by lead vocalist Alex Turner, which gives it a solo album vibe.

The sound of the album gives off a laid-back ’70s sound that perhaps Van Morrison or David Bowie might have made. Such lavish sounds can be heard on the songs “One Point Perspective” and “The Ultracheese.”

The album lacks the band’s old pent-up angst and grunge that was seen throughout their previous work. However, with their previous album, AM, it was not difficult to see the musical direction Arctic Monkeys were headed in.

Although AM had a grunge sound, it was more mainstream and strayed away from Arctic Monkeys’ original sound.

So, though Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is completely different, it should not be a shock to many of the band’s fans.
