J. Cole captures new sound with KOD

J.Cole continues to lack the recognition he deserves, but after releasing his fifth album, KOD, he became a hot topic among fans of the rap community. The 12-track album captures a different side of Cole.

Typically he has been known for the hip hop style that relates to his previous albums, such as Born Sinner or 2014 Forest Hill Drive, which incorporate more of an R&B style rather than straight rap. Also, compared to his last album, 4 Your Eyez Only, Cole has transitioned from reminiscing on his life to targeting others and their choices.

For example, “The Cut Off,” featuring kiLL edward, accurately represents the rap industry as a whole: dissing those who did not show support during the start of the Cole’s career and asking them to reconsider their judgement.

Cole also seems to be targeting the newer generation of rappers, specifically Lil Pump, as he pokes fun at the fact that Lil Pump is “barely old enough to drive” on “1985.” This track also seems to foreshadow a potential last project for Cole, considering “The Fall Off” follows other Cole mixtape titles that have tracked his career, like “The Come Up” and “The Warm Up.”

Hopefully Cole fans will not have to wait nearly another two years for new music, whether it is his last effort or not, for the wait is too much to handle.
