Justin Timberlake’s newest album, Man of the Woods, should make fans “cry a river” with how much it lacks the respectable Timberlake that everyone knows and loves.

Over the course of the past month, Timberlake has teased the album with releases of singles like “Filthy,” “Supplies,” and “Say Something.” The hopes for this album slowly declined with each release, though.

Considering the popularity of his last album, The 20/20 Experience, Timberlake raised the stakes of this album to the highest they could be. So it is not so surprising that it is a disappointment. While trying to adopt a new sound, Timberlake ultimately turns his well known pop sound into a strange acoustic-indie noise.

His duet with country artist Chris Stapleton is where he goes wrong. Combining two completely different artists from two completely different musical backgrounds is like combining oil with water, especially in this case.

The only sign of relief is from the song “Morning Light,” featuring Alicia Keys. The two artists complement each other perfectly to create sounds sent from the gods.

Timberlake also redeemed himself at the Super Bowl halftime show this year, so he can be forgiven this one time.
