The old saying about relationships is that if two people are meant to be together, eventually they’ll find their way back. A similar relationship formed between senior Gehrig Hutchison and wrestling.
After beginning wrestling in the fifth grade, Hutchison took a two-year break due to other athletic obligations. Coming into his freshman year, however, Hutchison knew that wrestling was his passion.
“I loved playing basketball and baseball growing up, but I really enjoy the one-on-one aspect that wrestling has to offer. Wrestling runs in my family and it allows me to set and achieve my own limits,” Hutchison said.
Freshman year proved to be a challenge for Hutchison, as he only won eight matches.
“After taking two years off, it felt like I was starting over. Even though it was a tough year as far as wins and losses, I’m glad it happened,” Hutchison said.
Sophomore year and junior year were a complete turnaround. Hutchison doubled his win totals by his sophomore year. He finished third in the section and qualified for WPIALs both years, and as a junior last year he added a county championship to his resume.

Wrestling Coach Brian Newman saw Hutchison make tremendous strides in each offseason.
“Gehrig came to us weighing 160 pounds and now he’s 195,” Newman said. “I’m so proud of all the hard work he displays to his teammates. His talent combined with his multiple workouts a day makes him a true leader.”
Junior teammate Connor Sidoruk also speaks highly of Hutchison.
“Seeing the passion he has for the sport is inspirational,” Sidoruk said. “We push each other at practice every single day, and he’s always teaching me new takedowns that I can use.”
Wrestling has also given Hutchison the opportunity to travel around the country. Over his four years, he has wrestled in Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina.
“Competing outside of Pennsylvania allows me to experience new competitions as I try to accomplish my goal of going to states this year. It also opens the door to all kinds of recruiting opportunities,” Hutchison said.
Hutchison has narrowed down his college choices to Gannon and Seton Hill University. He plans to study physical therapy.
Before he leaves, though, Hutchison wants to impact the youth. Hutchison achieves this by volunteering with Baldwin wrestling youth programs.
“I remember when I was their age, and it’s vital to form a strong connection with the younger generation to ensure the growth of Baldwin wrestling,” Hutchison said.
