Pitch Perfect franchise ends with an okay movie

Pitch Perfect 3 is the definition of an “okay” film when compared to its predecessors.

The main issue with the movie is the plot and the subplot. For the plot, the Bellas go on the USO tour in Europe and they compete in yet another competition for the chance to open for DJ Khaled and be signed with his label. The whole competition appears phoned in and the way the whole movie wraps up is way too happy go lucky. As for the subplot involving Amy and her dad, it just has no place in this film and it would be a better movie without it.

The comedy usually hits its mark and pokes fun at the characters themselves, with one of the best jokes being between the commentators at the end. Other comedic moments revolve around making fun the franchise itself by using the two girls in the Bellas no one cares about and filling in unexplained story elements, the funniest involving Lily’s voice.

The music isn’t as good as the last two films, even though it’s the same genres. This might be because the other competitors are bands, which clashes with the acapella theme the franchise is famous for.

There’s also the fact none of the guys from the Trebles are in the movie. The only explanation the audience gets is that Jesse and Becca broke up while Amy dumped Bumper. Instead, Chloe gets a romantic interest and Becca gets a flirty relationship with DJ Khaled’s music producer; the audience ends up not caring much about either of them.

Overall, the film could be a much worse cash-grab sequel, but that doesn’t excuse the faults it has.
