Junior Connor Sidoruk surprised many people at a holiday wrestling tournament at West Mifflin over the break when he placed sixth after coming in unseeded.

Close to 30 teams participated in the tournament. Sidoruk competed in the 170-pound division.

“It was satisfying to see that my hard work paid off in such a large tournament. I still have a lot to improve on, but I’m very happy at where I’m at in this point of the season,” Sidoruk said.

Senior athletes Gehrig Hutchison and Jamil Khalil also placed. Hutchison secured fifth place in the 182-pound division after two close losses, and Khalil got fourth in the 160-pound division.

“As a team we need to work wrestling a complete six-minute match and avoid as many of the careless mistakes as possible,” Hutchison said.

The boys take on Upper St. Clair on Wednesday.

“Upper St. Clair is always a tough opponent but as long as we stay focused, we will succeed very well individually,” Hutchison said.
