The girls swim team picked up its first victory of the season on Thursday night, defeating South Park at home.

“Having our first win was nice, especially for the younger girls on our team. It was new and exciting for them to experience this,”  Varney said.

Freshman Nicole Kosco and junior Sophia Altavilla had strong performances, Kosco earning second place in 200 freestyle and Altavilla earning first place in 500 freestyle. Both swimmers missed WPIAL qualification times by only a few seconds.

Senior Kaleigh Varney said the team is coming close to WPIALs in the 100 and 200 relay, but a little more practice is needed.

“Christmas training is coming up … which is when we kick it into full gear and work really really hard, and we just need to keep pushing ourselves to to the best that we can,” Varney said.

The team is preparing for the rest of the season by getting themselves in the right mindset and staying positive, Varney said.
