This past weekend, seniors Tony Mendez and Chad Kelley along with junior Thomas Ahlin competed in KDKA TV’s Hometown High Q academic quiz bowl.

The Baldwin team competed against Fox Chapel and Deer Lakes at the KDKA studio downtown.

Fox Chapel won, while tThe Baldwin team finished third, with a score of 220.

“I didn’t expect us to get first place, but I also didn’t think we would get last,” Mendez said.

Mendez, who is the captain of the team, competed last year as well.

“The team has been practicing 30 minutes every other day for the past three weeks,” Mendez said.

Competitors were chosen based on performance during practice and general interest.

“At first, we didn’t have the trigger fingers Fox Chapel did, so we got behind early,” Ahlin said, who was a backup on last year’s team.

The Baldwin match will air Dec. 23 on KDKA at 11 am.
