Lamar’s single strays from mainstream

Kendrick Lamar has returned with the single “The Heart Part 4,” which acts as more of a proclamation than a radio single, with the Compton MC used the biting track to fire off a warning shot to the rest of the hip-hop community.

The single includes all the ingredients of a proper lead single, a produced beat built on piano and 808 bass, a chorus fans can spit along to, and moral message that takes a more unorthodox approach than other mainstream rap.

The sound builds off of what Lamar offered on Untitled/Unmastered, using some of the same 808s and downbeats, but with gospel choir backing vocals and more of a jazzy feel.

Once again, Lamar has refused to be stagnant, and instead continues to grow as an artist.
