For the first time in more than 20 years, a Baldwin tennis player is going to the WPIAL tennis singles finals.

Freshman Beth Yauch is competing today. She qualified by finishing second overall in section singles, losing only to the top player from Fox Chapel. The top four finalists for singles in the section go to the WPIAL finals.

Yauch said did not expect to go this far in her freshman year.

“It feels weird, but it is an honor,” Yauch said.

She feels she is ready to play, and she believes she has a good chance to make something happen at today’s competition.

“I heard that I got a pretty good draw,” Yauch said, “so I think I have a pretty good chance to go pretty far.”

The WPIAL finals matches are being held today and tomorrow.
