Summer movies don’t look promising
May 25, 2017
The cinematic summer movies have already begun and there are few movies to be hyped over but plenty to cringe over.
2017 so far has been a great year for movies and every time one would visit the movie theater there would be even more to look forward to. Movies like Wonder Woman and The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 promoted hype from many comic book fans due to the awesome and nostalgic trailers.
Wonder Woman is an action-packed, intense film that seems to have an original story to add to the character of Wonder Woman that everyday audiences and comic book fans alike can enjoy. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a satire about superheros, seems to be just as fine as the original, and exists for the nostalgia factor, if nothing else.
These movies have a promising following along with other films that have the action bait and chick-flick bait many audiences look for. Some look great and others embarrassing.
Everything, Everything seems like another chick flick with no purpose other than to lure teenage girls into another Fault in Our Stars ripoff. A typical awkward teenage girl is fatally ill and cannot step outside her home until she meets an unrealistic dream boy whose sole purpose is to “fix” her or give her the happiness she lacks.
That’s not the only film that doesn’t look promising.
The Emoji Movie is the film that stirs up the most hatred despite everyone’s love for the emoticons. In the city of Textopolis, every emoticon only expresses one emotion except for the one special emoji who goes on a journey to be like everyone else. The story and the message are predictable. It is obviously a cynical cash-grab off of Apple’s favored emoticons. This movie never needed to be made and Sony should soon regret the decision to release it.
Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate McKinnon and Demi Moore star in Rough Night. This looks like a terrible excuse for a comedy about a bachelorette party that goes wrong when the women accidentally kill the male stripper. It seems like it will end up just like the Ghostbusters remake: unoriginal and tedious at the same time.
Another comedy that is not promising would be Snatched starring Amy Schumer. A mother-daughter trip turns into a nightmare when Amy Schumer’s character and her mother are kidnapped and try to discover a way to escape. The trailer is just one tedious joke after another that seems guaranteed to bore audiences to death.
However, there is one film that seems like it will refrain from copying a formula or literally creating a shot-by-shot remake and it is My Cousin Rachel.
This film starring Rachel Weisz is about a woman who is suspected of murder by her cousin. Meanwhile, a young Englishman (Sam Claflin) seeks revenge but ultimately falls in love with the mysterious woman. It seems like such an interesting twist on a romance and each character seems so intriguing that audiences may see the film mostly from intense curiosity.
Summer movies are one of the most important times of the year for cinema but this year’s films don’t look promising. It is time for studios to crank out new ideas and maybe audiences will return.
