New fashion trends seem to lack motivation

Fashion in the ‘80s revolved around big hair. In the ‘90s, it was high-waisted pants. In the ‘00s, it was baggy everything. Today, apparently, the fashion trend is wanting to look like a homeless person.

Beginning with holes in jeans and nappy hair, the fashion industry really embraced this look when celebrities such as Jaden Smith, Kanye West and the Olsen twins began dressing distressed.

Oversized shirts and saggy jeans used to be considered out of the norm, but more recently, it is hard to find clothes that don’t fall under the “bum” category.

In the past, dressing distressed used to be a sign of low status. However high-end stores such as Forever 21, H&M, and American Eagle find their biggest profits on clothes that have been purposely torn up.

There has yet to be a shoe company that follows this trend, where they would design shoes that already are worn down and torn. It would not be surprising, though, if this became the next up and coming look on New York Fashion Week.

Aside from distressed clothing, many other unusual style choices have become famous in the fashion industry. These include sneakers with skirts, the Birkenstock comeback, and the continued confusion of jeggings. All of these encompass the mysterious wonders of what can be considered true fashion.

Whether this is due to the lack of motivation in the fashion industry, or pure laziness about actually dressing in a presentable manner, this style doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
