Boys basketball heading to playoffs

The boys basketball team is awaiting the announcement of playoff pairings after ending the regular season Saturday with a win against Thomas Jefferson.

The Highlanders also won on Friday over Bethel Park. Ending the season with back-to-back wins Friday and Saturday was a big confidence booster going into the playoffs, junior Jake Monroe said.

The boys’ overall season record is 15-7, and 8-4 within their section.

With the end of the regular season, the boys are now looking forward to WPIAL playoffs. The team will find out Tuesday night who and when they will play in the first round.

Monroe said that whoever the team plays, they plan to “come out strong and play [their] game”.

In preparation for playoffs, they are having two-hour practices this week.

Senior Anthony Reid said the team plans to “stay focused and locked in.”

Along with Reid, junior Nick Fiumara, who was a main contributor to the team’s success during the regular season, are expected to play key roles in the playoffs, Monroe said.

The boys do not have a set long-term plan, but they are working hard for a spot in the state playoffs to follow WPIALs.

For now the Highlanders are “just trying to take it one game at a time,” Monroe said.
