The space between originality and film leaves wide gap

The Space between Us follows the story of Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield), a 16- year- old boy who was born on Mars.

After his mother died while giving birth, it was left to the scientists on the mission to take care of him. The movie fast- forwards 16 years, when Gardner is given the opportunity to travel to Earth for the first time. When he arrives, he travels across the country to find his real father, while it is unknown to him that his body is slowly deteriorating on Earth.

Even though the plot seems fast- paced and intense, the introduction is lengthy and the story does not really pick up until the last 30 minutes. The main storyline has been seen before in other movies, being overly cheesy and unrealistic, particularly when he falls in love with a girl on earth through video chat and searches for his father with her help. The movie’s ending is emotional and powerful, but it does not make up for the slow- moving first half.
