Fences has its ups and its downs

As far as plays turned into movies go, Fences isn’t too bad. The film features talents such as Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, who bring their roles as Troy and Rose Maxson to life. The play is set in Pittsburgh and the movie was filmed here, so it’s interesting to see places that local audiences know well.

The film is a drama and the plot is slow and at times dull, but it has touching moments scattered about. There are two slight problems with the film. The first is that an important character is never seen in the film and only mentioned. The other issue is that a pivotal moment that happens in the movie is not shown on camera.

The main problem, though, is that Troy Maxson is one of the most unlikable main characters to ever grace the screen and it’s extremely hard to sympathize for him due to his actions and baseball metaphors.

Overall, if someone can handle the problems and connect with the other characters, then is the film worth the ticket cost.
