Review: Childish Gambino comes back with new style

Katie Zemaitis, Staff Writer

After almost three years of silence, the artist known as Childish Gambino has released his new album Awaken My Love. Gambino, who is actually actor Donald Glover, completely changed his style. Glover took a different approach on this new album by focusing on a genre closer to funk rather than rap. There is an emotional aspect on this album that was lacking in his earlier releases, and instrumental breaks have a huge presence in almost every song. The opening track “Me and Your Mama,” highlights Gambino’s shift of focus to intricate beats instead of intricate lyrics. His impressive falsetto is unexpected considering his early rap music. Some fans have voiced confusion and disappointment in the change, because it is not what they were expecting. It’s clear that this album is personal to Glover and isn’t necessarily aimed at pleasing his fans. It’s more of an experimental project. The song “Baby Boy” was written about Glover’s child, who was born during his absence from the music world. Dedicated Gambino fans will appreciate the new development in his music.
