Physical education teacher Tim Laughlin is well-known throughout the district for his work with Partners gym class, the Special Olympics, and other adapted recreation events.

Now he has earned statewide recognition as well.

Last weekend Laughlin received the Adapted Physical Activities Professional Recognition Award from the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

“I never went into doing all of these programs to be awarded, but I appreciate it and it’s nice that my work is noticed,” Laughlin said.

The person who nominated Laughlin was a previous president of the statewide organization. She read about him in an article in the Post-Gazette, and after looking him up online she decided to nominate him for the award.

Eric Jankoski, Laughlin’s partner in the Special Olympics program, said the award was well-earned.

“His positive attitude is contagious and it can change someone’s day,” Jankoski said.

Jankoski also talked about how humble Laughlin is and said “he tries to help every person that he can, no matter who it is”.

Laughlin and his Special Olympics participants have the Polar Plunge coming up this weekend, and Laughlin continues to work on other adaptive recreation programs throughout the region.

“It’s all about the kids, but receiving this award touched my heart,” he said.
