Senior Maddi Sgattoni received the KDKA Extra Effort Award on Friday from sports anchor Bob Pompeani during an assembly in the gym.
“This award shows that hard work pays off,” Sgattoni said. “It’s great to get rewarded for the hard work I’ve put in.”
Sgattoni has helped lead two WPIAL championship volleyball teams at Baldwin and was named all-state in each of the past two years. She also plays for a team outside of Baldwin called Renaissance.
Sgattoni also excels in the classroom. She is ranked 15th in the Class of 2017 and takes many honors and AP courses.
Pompeani praised Sgattoni’s efforts in and out of the classroom.
“Her G.P.A. is great, she’s one of the elite volleyball players in the area, and she’s also committed to extra-curricular activities. We need more people like her,” Pompeani said.
Sgattoni will continue her volleyball career in college at the United States Naval Academy, where she has received a scholarship.
“I’m really excited to be able to have this great opportunity ahead of me,” Sgattoni said.
