Dab
The Dab became a popular move in late 2015 with the release of Migos’ “Look At My Dab.” The dance involves dropping the head while extending the arm, touching the head to the inner elbow. The phenomenon is known for resembling a proper sneezing technique.
Hit the Quan
Hitting the Quan, originally made popular by Rich Homie Quan in April, resurfaced later this year with iLoveMemphis’ release of their song named after the dance. To properly Hit the Quan, one must rotate their arms in a way that is similar to the way windmill propellers blow in the wind.
Hit Dem Folks
A modern-day Hand Jive is the best way to describe Hit Dem Folks. The dance consists of shuffling the hands in front of the body before spreading them wide apart, creating a gesture resembling a hug. Hit Dem Folks is a move that is often mixed in with many other freestyle moves.
Milly Rock
The song “Milly Rock” by 2 Milly made its debut on Soundcloud, quickly becoming a sensation. Dancers swing their hands across the body while alternating which legs are being lifted. The Milly Rock is an easy dance that most people do without realizing it’s a real move.
Nae Nae
The Nae Nae constantly comes hand-in-hand with the Whip, making its big introduction to the dance world through the song “Watch Me.” The Nae Nae requires a swaying motion of the arm above the ear, similar to swatting a fly or waving to get the attention of somebody.
Nasty Freestyle
Often seen in vines, the Nasty Freestyle gained its fame through T-Wayne’s song of the same name. The dance craze is probably popular due to how simple the dance is; dancers swing their arms and wrists in a circle in front of themselves. It is similar to a modern version of the Charleston dance from the 1920s.
Whip
One of this year’s biggest dance crazes began with Silentó’s release of the song “Watch Me.” The Whip is a dance that involves a crouched base position and an exaggerated extension of the arm. Although the move was made famous by Silentó, celebrities everywhere have adopted the celebratory move, making it possibly revolutionary enough to replace fist pumping.
