Most students see the radio as a place where they listen to today’s Top 40 hits, but this coming February students will get to experience radio in a different way.

Mike Pintek, a talk show host from KDKA radio, will be coming to Baldwin to broadcast his show and interview students on the air.

In the beginning of November, P.J. Kumanchik, a producer from the Pintek show, contacted Principal Dr. Walter Graves to ask if Baldwin was interested in being involved in the event.

“They came to the school to look at LGI 2, where the event will be held,” Graves said.

Each year Pintek tries to go to a different school to broadcast his show, where students get to talk about current events and topics that interest them.

Some topic examples that could be brought up include the recent attacks on Paris and America’s Second Amendment, Graves said.

“This is an opportunity for students to have a voice,” Graves said, “I think it will reflect well on our district.”

Students from the Morning Announcements productions team, the Purbalite, honors civics students, and ELL students are being invited to participate.

“As new Americans, I thought the ELL students could give an interesting perspective other kids may not think of,” Graves said.

Students who participate will be rotated in between noon and 3 p.m., the hours of the broadcast.

Graves said the limited number of participating students should ensure a good discussion.

“I think students will be more willing to express themselves in a smaller group without being influenced by others,” Graves said.

In addition to the talk show discussions, the school’s jazz band will play during the show, directed by band Director Greg Steele.
