Though it’s a cute film, The Age of Adaline is just another love story trying–and failing–to stay relevant. Its outlandish premise involves the main character, Adaline Bowman, being struck by magical lightning in 1937 and never aging another day. As time passes, she is forced to change her identity every decade after people become suspicious of her eternal youthfulness. Set in the 20th century, the movie promises cool costumes and a unique atmosphere, but disappointingly skips through the interesting historical scenes to get to the modern day. It also attempts to explain its immortality premise with fake science jargon that sounds intelligent but is actually utter nonsense to anyone who has ever taken a high school science class. Given the immortality, sappy romance, and weak plot, The Age of Adaline is strongly reminiscent of Twilight, and not in a good way.
