Upperclassmen attended a mock DUI crash assembly Monday in which Baldwin students portrayed a drunk driver and passengers who were wounded or killed.
Seniors Mara Meyer, Doug Altavilla, Pam Gonzalez, Mary Beckavac, Steph Teahan, Ali Ruscitto, Alexx Suchy, Evan Snyder, Mitch Tarap, Jordan Gitzen and Morgan Schmitt simulated the crash and contributed to the production of the assembly.
The planning included multiple meetings with assembly organizers and fire/emergency services personnel. The team put together a hard-hitting scene to convey an anti-drunk driving message just as junior and senior proms are approaching.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be as crazy as it was. I thought it would look more staged,” Meyer said. “It was too real.”
The assembly started with a video in the auditorium that showed a student drinking before prom. Then the assembly moved outside, where the senior participants acted out the events that follow a crash scene.
At the end of the day, the upperclassmen held a mock memorial service in the auditorium for those seniors who were victims in the simulated crash. Upperclassmen then signed a banner pledging to not drink and drive on prom night.
“It was super real once it started. The tears were real, the screams were real and nothing was planned,” Meyer said.
