With a 6-1 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night, the Toronto Blue Jays are now leading the World Series 3-2 and taking the baseball world by storm.
Rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage has been lights out in the World Series. He was Toronto’s first-round pick in 2024 and did not even play a game in the organization until this year. He started the season in Single-A and flew through the minors leagues, leading to a major league promotion in September.
He did well in his 14 innings pitched in the majors, having a 3.21 ERA, but he has been a huge part in the team’s World Series run. In the postseason, he has 39 strikeouts, 17 of them being in the World Series alone.
On Wednesday, he had 12 strikeouts, which is a rookie record for a single World Series game. He also had an 11 strikeout game against the Yankees in the ALDS, making him the first rookie with multiple 10+ strikeout games in a single postseason.
Toronto’s hitters have not disappointed either. In the five World Series games so far, they have scored 29 runs.
They shined early, putting up 11 runs in Game 1, and then five or more runs in three other games. The ALCS MVP, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., has been on fire once again, hitting two home runs and batting .364 this series. Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk have also stood out in the World Series, with Barger hitting .471 and Kirk hitting two home runs.
The Dodgers have been nothing but disappointing this World Series. The only Dodgers who are hitting above .300 are Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez. Players like Tommy Edman, Will Smith, Freddie Freeman, and especially Mookie Betts have not done anything – and they are supposed to be the team’s best hitters.
Their pitching has been bad too. Their ace, Blake Snell, had an amazing postseason early on, but in the World Series, he has given up 10 earned runs in 11 innings. The only pitcher who is doing well is Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw a complete game in Game 2.
This series is not over yet, though, as Game 6 and, if needed, Game 7 will be played in Toronto on Friday and Saturday.
Both teams are extremely good, and the Dodgers could turn this series around very easily.
